10. The Grand Banks

Updated: Mar 19, 2023

It was a little tougher yesterday afternoon with winds up to 45 knots (83 km/h) and waves arriving from all directions. Let's say it was stirring. The engine also died once more, but nothing will prevent our dear captain from getting to his destination.

He passed the Grand Banks last night. He says the sea has completely changed. The waves were very big but they were long. He was sailing with two jibs (foresails) yesterday. He even saw fishermen.

The Grand Banks of Newfoundland are submarine banks that are a maximum of 200 meters deep but are generally 51-100 meters deep. The southern and eastern slopes are very steep and descend rapidly to depths over 1000 meters (more gradual in the North, North East and West). They extend more than 200 nautical miles from the coast. It is also in the Grand Banks that the Labrador Current and the Gulf Stream meet. There are so many fish there.

Let's say he can't wait to see the sun and the heat. He turned off his GPS again last night, sorry for those who wanted to locate him on the map, but he had to save his electricity.

This morning, the height of joy: he managed to start the engine while the batteries were at zero. Another successful challenge in the middle of the ocean. There were still big waves today and a lot of wind this morning, but the wind practically stopped in the afternoon, so he can take advantage of it a bit to relax.
