This morning, we woke up in great shape. Ready to spend the day on the road and discover the island of Gran Canaria. So we go on foot, to look for a store that rents scooters. Difficult to find because when looking for scooters, it is rather electric skateboards that we find. And it's less practical on the highway, let's say. We take the opportunity to walk in the streets of Las Palmas de G.C and in doing so, we discover a small pastry shop. The lady does not speak English or French so we point what we want. A palm leaf for Louis, a puff pastry for me and a croissant with a little jelly on top. At least it is shiny rather than matte. I don't particularly like croissants, but since we're in Europe we might as well give it a try. Oh my my… the best croissant I have eaten in my life. I could have eaten dozens! The other pastries are good but the croissant eclipses them all.
As we can't find a store with scooters in the area, we call a taxi to go to the one Vanessa at Pier 19 suggested to us the day before yesterday. Bingo! They have one. Well, it looks more like a motorcycle than a Vespa-style scooter, but that's fine, at least it's not a motorcycle. I find a helmet quickly but it is more difficult for Louis. He has the choice of full helmet only, like for a motorcycle, instead of just a half helmet like me. With his beard, he suffocates. No question of putting on motorcycle helmets. So he ended up finding a helmet a little too small for him, but otherwise where we're going to rent a car so his choice was quickly made.
So we go through the streets of the city. At first, I like it less. That's a lot of stops, cars and pedestrians near us. Then it's the highway and speed. Let's say I have fears that go back to adolescence so it doesn't help my state of mind. Louis is familiarizing himself with our rental, so he too likes this part of the journey less. We have an idea of where we want to go, at least I would like to see a city that I saw in a magazine at the grocery store. We look at the way to get there. I memorize 2-3 stages of the trip, then we stop and I memorize 2-3 other stages. We drive for a while but not so joyfully. As it is less pleasant, we tell ourselves that we will drop this destination and turn back. On the highway, there is so much wind that the scooter shakes. Not a good feeling! So we decide to take the next exit and we arrive in small suburban streets. Already, we prefer. We continue a bit and we decide to go back to our destination: Tejeda. We now ride on country streets, and we really enjoy the adventure. It's beautiful, it's quiet, it allows us to fully enjoy the moment. Our sense of smell is fully put to use and experiences a real feast for the senses: thyme, bay leaves, various flowers and shrubs!
We often stop to take pictures or stretch our legs. We stop at a restaurant at the top of a hill. There are hens, roosters and chicks who come to see us. We feed them a little. In fact, at some point, a hen approaches with her 3 chicks. A rooster does the same. I get up to feed the chicks and keep the rooster away. He is getting closer. I block his way. No, but the law of the strongest is enough. He will not have the piece of bread. It is for the chicks that we want to give it. He will play the strongest another time. He won't win against me. The chicks will have enough to fill their bellies a little. And their mother hen will be able to breathe for a few moments. Louis finds it funny to see me blocking access to a rooster, but I have a mission and I watch the grain/bread.
We then continue to Tejeda. It's so beautiful, it's a bit of Italy, a bit of Utah, a bit of the Grand Canyon in the same landscape. We are so happy to have made the journey, but before we get to the city, which is very close, we decide that after hours of driving, enough is enough. We retrace our steps, anyway, we will go back with the moms in July. So even if we don't see the interior of the city now, it's not that bad and it will make us see something new this summer.
The return to the highway is better than this morning, in addition, we do not have the headwind, that helps. We arrive completely burnt/tired at the marina. We leave the scooter there. We decide to bring it back tomorrow morning to its point of origin. Right now, we just want to relax with a drink.
We see the little dog again on the dock of our boat. We find him adorable. Not our usual style of dog, but so sweet and most importantly, he doesn't bark. Let's say that it is a breed that we have often seen barking. We see a boat neighbor take him in his arms and put him in his boat. He has a master. The dog can go where he wants, but he always comes back to the boat. We therefore forget the potential adoption of the dog. We had fun just dreaming about it.
