Best schrimps ever!

Updated: Mar 19, 2023

We enjoy the morning together in the sailboat until someone from the marina comes to tell us that they have a place at the dock for us around noon. Great, it was quick to get a dock! A Swiss boat/crew is leaving and we have to take their place quickly so that no other boat takes our spot. We are therefore recommended to discuss with those who are leaving to agree on a departure time to facilitate the dock transfer.

We send a message to Louis' brother to ask them to arrive a little earlier than expected to help us moor at the wharf. We know that he loves sailboats and that he will surely love to help. They will be there for 12:30. Meanwhile, the Swiss boat leaves (earlier than expected) and Martin, the captain of the boat on which we are now tied, offers us his help. Interesting fact, for those interested 😉: He and his wife rent their house in England and can thus live their adventures on their sailboat.

The mooring at the quay is done like a charm, but I am happy that Martin and his wife are there to receive the mooring lines that I send them because the finger dock is really very narrow and short and I would not have liked to jump/go down ( you're not suppose to jump from a boat) and land in the water. Sorry Jacques (brother of Louis), it will be for next time. So we are ready and moored when the others pick us up for dinner at the restaurant we saw on our last walk near Biscoitos.

Photo: You see the dock on the right, well it's no wider than the photo and only about 20ft on a 40ft sailboat.

We first leave all 5 for Furnas do Enxofre. Natural monument of Terceira. We walk through a field of fumaroles, with valleys/hollows exposing these vast columns of smoke straight out of the bowels of the earth. I liked it, but the others a little less. I found it fascinating to see its columns of vapors and feel their heat. I believe that after yesterday's caves, the others were a little less amazed.

We then leave for the Caneta restaurant and we arrive a little before the time of the reservation (2 p.m.) and order aperitifs which we drink in the small wooded courtyard while a place is freed up in the dining room on the 2nd floor.

For vegetarians/vegans and any other style/diet out there, I like to try everything. I like meat, but over the years I pay more attention to my consumption, for personal reasons. I also like tofu, legumes, fish and I love seafood.

I like to discover typical meals when I travel and this adventure in the Azores will be no exception. It's been a long time since I've wanted to eat almost everything on the menu. I like to try, but that doesn't mean I like everything 😉 It's not something I usually eat but I wanted the blood pudding as a starter. I'll save you the wait, it was excellent, nice little balls, fried I think, that melted in your mouth. Succulent angus aged beef carpaccio! Then we shared 1/2 kilo of prawns at 5. We were afraid of having too many and not being able to eat our main meal afterwards. I have to tell you right away that it was finally too little. The best prawns I have had to eat in my life. The perfect texture, neither overcooked nor undercooked. I'll be dreaming of these shrimp for a long time and I'm not the only one.

We take advantage of the afternoon to go to the swimming pool of the hotel where the family of Louis rents a room in Angra do Heroismo: Terceira Mar Hotel. Superb view, large swimming pool for all and outdoor showers. We will spend the afternoon there. You have to relax a bit 😊

We will have an aperitif at the hotel bar. Take note that alcohol is a little more expensive there than elsewhere, but we didn't want to go out. Supper on the terrace of the bar: club sandwich with egg and sauce for Louis, he really liked it.

We return to the boat by taxi, around 25 euros to get to Praia da Vitória. Tomorrow is the last day we all have together before our travel routes separate. It will be a memorable day!
